Family Fun Night
The school district will again be holding family fun nights for incoming kindergarteners to help them and their families prepare for kindergarten.
Kindergarten and first-grade registration open
Parents of children who will be enrolled in school for the first time next fall are encouraged to contact their area principal’s office.
Kindergarten registration is open to any child who will be 5 years old on or before September 1. To be eligible for first grade, a child must be 6 years old by the same date.
Parents may elect to wait one year before registering a child if the child is not ready to begin kindergarten.
Many factors contribute to the combination of skills that make children ready for school. Parents should consider physical growth, general activity related to growth, practical skills, memory, understanding and general knowledge. A more detailed list of these areas is available at elementary schools in the district.
Before registering, parents are encouraged to review the immunization status of their child. Children are required to be immunized with four doses of diphtheria and tetanus vaccine; three doses of polio vaccine; three doses of hepatitis B; two doses each of rubella, measles and mumps vaccine; and two doses of varicella vaccine (or history of disease). Children may be exempt from immunization requirements for medical, religious or strong philosophical objections.
Online kindergarten registration is available through the district website, or parents may contact the following school secretaries:
Fayette Township – Deanna Fawver, 463-2236;
Monroe, Susquehanna and Delaware townships and Thompsontown Borough – Lori Lauver, 694-3961;
Femanagh and Walker townships and Mifflintown Borough – Marge Noerr, 436-2111;
Lack, Tuscarora, Beale, Milford, Spruce Hill and Turbett townships and Mifflin and Port Royal Boroughs – Melissa Smith, 436-6816.
Lauretta Woodson Awards Recommendations Sought
The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees has developed the Lauretta Woodson Award program to honor educators and support professionals for doing an outstanding job within a district or school. Chapters select award recipients and present them with a medallion, certificate, and PASR pin.
Each chapter is eligible to present the Lauretta Woodson Awards to one support professional and one teacher per year.
The award is named for Dr. Lauretta Woodson, who rose through the ranks of PASR and was instrumental in helping PASR to become what it is today. She faithfully served the retired school employees in the Delaware Chapter and Region 1 for many years, and upon her passing, bequeathed a sum of money to PASR to be used for the support of public education.
Parents and district faculty and staff members are invited to recommend an educator or support professional for the Lauretta Woodson Award. The deadline for nominations is March 31, 2014.
