Is my child required to wear a mask?

The Governor’s Office and PA DOH have mandated that all students will be required to wear masks/face protection in schools if they cannot maintain 6 feet of social distance.

Are there going to be times that my child can take off their mask?

Students are permitted to remove their masks/face protection when at a classroom work desk

or work station and maintaining 6 feet of social distance, when eating and/or drinking, and when outside of the school buildings while maintaining 6 feet of social distance.

Are plastic face shields an alternative to wearing a mask?

The students will have the option to have their own individual face shield to use while at

school. Students wanting to use plastic face shields at school would need to wear a personal mask/face protection to and from school, but then could remove their mask/face protection to wear the plastic face shield while in school.

What if my child has a medical condition that precludes them from wearing a mask?

Students will be required to wear a mask/face protection unless they have a medical or mental condition or disability, documented in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of IDEA, that precludes the wearing of a face covering in school. Section 504 and IDEA permit school officials to ask for medical documentation to demonstrate a student’s need for an exemption from any face covering. This means that if you choose to send your child to in-person schooling this fall, your child will be required to wear a mask/face protection unless a medical note is submitted from your healthcare provider and your child’s IEP/504 team has determined the mask is not required.

What will be done if my child refuses to wear their mask but they choose the traditional version?

If a student continues to defy face covering guidelines, administration will follow progressive disciplinary consequences and may place a child in an alternate educational environment that protects the safety of all students.

Will my child have their temperature taken upon arrival to school?

All students will enter the building where the thermal camera is installed. The thermal camera will register temperatures. Parents will be responsible for checking their child’s temperature and doing a health screening before coming to the school.

Will my child be provided with bus transportation this school year?

Bus transportation will be provided to all students that qualify. All students will be required to wear mask/face protection while on the bus.

Is my JCSD child still able to attend The Academy?

Yes, JCSD students will have the opportunity to attend The Academy (The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology).

Will there be sports this school year?

Currently, the PIAA and PA Governor’s Office are permitting school districts to run interscholastic sports.

My family is going on vacation to a state that the PA Governor has instituted quarantine recommendations. How is this going to be handled?

Students that are returning from out-of-state vacations/trips to states listed on the Governor’s travel advisory are recommended, not required, to quarantine for 14 days following the return from states identified as COVID-19 hotspots. A self-imposed 14-day quarantine would be considered an excused absence as per PA Attendance Code. In the situation of self-imposed 14-day quarantine, the parent is responsible to provide the school principal of written documentation of the quarantine.

Are all JCSD Staff required to wear a mask?

All JCSD Staff and bus drivers will be required to wear masks/face protection if they cannot maintain 6 feet of social distance.

Is the JCSD increasing the amount of cleaning within the schools?

The school district will follow the CDC’s Guidelines for Cleaning and Disinfecting the Schools. Custodians will sanitize classrooms after each day of classroom use.

How are students going to use the cafeteria this school year?

Hand sanitizer will be available in the beginning of the line for student use. Students may go through the cafeteria lines, as normal, while maintaining social distancing. Serving lines may be set up differently to ensure a safe, one way flow.

Will my elementary child have recess?

Elementary students will have recess.

Would there be consequences if my child does not wear a mask to school?

The school district is required to enforce the Governor’s Office and PA DOH mandate that all students will be required to wear masks/face protection in schools. All students are required to adhere to the state’s mandate unless the school is provided medical documentation to demonstrate the student’s need for an exemption from any face covering. If a student chooses not to wear mask/face protection and does not provide the medical documentation listed above, the administration will work with the student and parent to comply or to find an alternative solution. If a student continues to defy face covering guidelines, administration will follow progressive disciplinary consequences and may place a child in an alternate educational environment that protects the safety of all students.

When a student/staff member becomes ill, experiencing symptoms that match that of COVID-19, whether the student/staff member is in school at the time of first noticing symptoms or outside of the school (i.e. at home), will there automatically be a forced quarantine of the individual and anyone they have come in contact with until they are tested for COVID-19?

If the student/staff has COVID symptoms, they will need to quarantine until they are cleared by a doctor. Anyone that has come in contact with the individual will not quarantine.

What do we do if someone in our family is exposed to COVID?

Monitor for symptoms

What happens if a student or teacher or staff member gets COVID?

We will address any confirmed instances on a case-by-case basis. A quarantine of the class or school would depend on many factors. We will follow CDC guidance.

Will the school notify the families of those children that were exposed to the person that is ill?

If your child has a fever of 100 or greater in school on a Tuesday and is sent home and by Thursday they are fever free. Can I send them back to school Friday?

If your child is sent home with a fever, they may return fever free after 72 hours.

If my child has multiple symptoms of Covid and is sent home when can they return?

Your child will need a doctor’s note to return to school.

Will there be extra time between classes to maintain social distancing in the hallway and give the kids enough time to get to their next class?

Would my child be able to move to option 2 if there is a time that things get worse or he is uncomfortable being in school?

Do we need to purchase ipad insurance? No, but you will be liable for any damage. Insurance will cover one time.

Does my student need to take their ipad home?

Yes. We want all students to take their ipads in case we are required to move to remote learning.

Can my child use a nebulizer at school this year?

Due to COVID-19 and for the safety of all staff and students, the JCSD will not be able to accommodate any medication administered via nebulizer during the 2020-21 school year. If your child typically uses a nebulizer at school, please contact your child's health care provider to discuss alternate modes of administration, such as an inhaler, while at school.

Homeroom listings are tentatively scheduled for release the week of August 10, 2020.
