December 23, 2020 Dear JCSD Families: At this time the JCSD is committed to reopening our schools on January 4, 2021 with the 4-1 plan. We feel that our students need to be back in school as soon as safely possible. Please keep in mind that depending on the most recent county infection data and number of staff quarantined or infected, we may need to alter the timing or the way we reopen our schools. Any changes will be communicated through our school calling system and posted on the district website. Moving forward, the district will try to react to active COVID cases, or staff shortages at the building level and avoid shutting down all school buildings, if possible. The criteria we will consider for these decisions can be found on the PDE website here: https://www.education.pa.gov/Schools/safeschools/emergencyplanning/COVID-19/SchoolReopeningGuidance/ReopeningPreKto12/PublicHealthGuidance/Pages/SchoolClosureRecommentations.aspx If in the event a school has to close, other models such as 2-2-1, may be implemented in order to reopen. This will be announced by the district administration. Also, if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, is awaiting test results, or has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, please keep your child home and contact your school nurse who will help determine quarantine dates. JCSD Families, After receiving a COVID-19 update for the county, I would like to share the current situation with our families and stakeholders. Over the last three days, there have been 84 new cases confirmed, our PCR percent positivity stands at 26.4% and the incident rate is up to 591 per 100,000. These numbers place Juniata County among the highest in the state for COVID-19 transmission risk. In addition, the county has been in the “Substantial Level of Community Transmission” status for three weeks, and we are anticipating remaining in the substantial category next week as well. The information above and the rate of spread our county is currently experiencing is concerning and requires the school district to make adjustments to our previous return to in-person learning plans. Based on the above data and the most recent guidance from the Governor’s office and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH), it is clear that we cannot open our schools for in-person instruction on December 1st. The guidance from the Governor and DOH indicate that we should remain in virtual learning until the transmission rate substantially slows and the county returns to a “Moderate Level of Community Transmission” for two weeks in a row. In order to achieve this goal, we are making the unfortunate decision to remain in virtual only learning until January 4th. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and reopen our schools for in-person learning as soon as it is safe to do so. Educationally Yours, Dr. Gary Dawson Superintendent Juniata County School District https://www.jcsdk12.org/o/jcsd/page/november-24-2020-covid-letter Meal pickup is between 2 and 2:45 today.

November 17, 2020 Dear JCSD Families: With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us and the current ranking of being #1 in the state for our COVID positivity rate, we have made the unfortunate decision to remain remote until December 1, 2020. We currently have twenty-five staff members in quarantine or isolation and over one hundred and fifty students in quarantine. We will continue monitoring county case numbers as well as positive cases within our schools. We were able to safely provide nine weeks of onsite instruction and we are frustrated we can not remain open for onsite instruction. We will continue to provide updates and information regarding our return to school. Please check your building’s social media pages for additional information regarding picture retakes and other activities that will need to be rescheduled. REMINDER: If there is someone in your household that is being evaluated and tested for COVID-19 infection, please notify the school nurse immediately. From Brian Kritzer with TIU #11, Local Task Force: Please share (far and wide) the link below which is to a parent/guardian LTF survey. The purpose of the survey is to gather information from parents/guardians and to possibly recruit new members. The survey is intended to be taken by parents/guardians that have a child with a disability but others (teachers/administrators/agencies) are welcome to participate. The survey is designed to be taken once to prevent multiple submissions from the same device. JCSD Families, On Monday afternoon, the district received guidance from the PA Department of Health and the PA Department of Education requiring students and staff to wear masks during the school day. This new guidance requires the wearing of masks even when six feet of social distancing can be achieved and will remain in effect until further notice. There will only be limited opportunities for students to remove their masks during the day including lunch and scheduled face coving breaks lasting no more than ten minutes per break. This latest adjustment is in response to information released from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The district will be evaluating the guidance and more information will be discussed at the upcoming board meeting. The Juniata County School Board of Directors voted last night to adjust the calendar for the upcoming school year. The first day for students was moved from August 26th to September 8th. The adjusted calendar will be available on the district website. We will continue to inform you as information becomes available. We would like to thank each of you for your patience as our community continues to navigate this unprecedented situation. Educationally Yours, Dr. Gary Dawson Superintendent

JCSD Community, Over the last few days several students have posted inappropriate comments and pictures to their social media accounts. The Juniata School District was both disappointed and concerned that our students would post this type of inappropriate and insensitive material. This action was certainly wrong and out of touch with the current outcry being displayed across our country. The district will continue to educate our students about the disparities and intolerance in our communities enabling them to hopefully make better decisions in the future. JCSD Families, As this challenging school year comes to an end, I would like to thank all of our students and families for their self-motivation and commitment to continuing with their school studies in the face of the COVID 19 pandemic. The resolve of this community is real, and we will surely be stronger for the effort when looking back at these times. As we approach the closing of the school year, I would like to share some dates and information. First, I would like our seniors and their families to know we are planning graduation activities. We were hopeful the pandemic would come to an end or at least allow for traditional type graduation ceremonies. As we move forward, we are ever hopeful but are planning some other options as well. The details and dates are not yet available. We will be releasing this information in a future correspondence. We also understand the COVID 19 restrictions came on quickly and students left school with the intentions of returning this year. Since this was not the case, many left personal items at school. We will be opening the school buildings on May 27th from 8:00am to 3:00pm and again on May 28th from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Students will be allowed to enter the schools during the above listed times to recover personal items. We are also asking they return any school items they may have in their possession including books, iPad with charger, and any other items students may have taken home to complete school work. There will be specific instructions at each building covering how to pick up and drop off materials. We are asking families to limit the number of people entering the school building to the student and one guardian. In addition, we ask all to practice social distancing and wear masks while on school property. Final grades/report cards will be available for viewing on Sapphire June 2nd. Again, I would like to thank our students and families for their patience and hard work over these difficult weeks and wish each of you a safe and healthy summer. Educationally Yours, Dr. Gary Dawson

JCSD SCHOOL YEAR INFORMATION — Updated 4/9/20 — 7:30 PM Governor Wolf announced today that Pennsylvania schools will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year. We were certainly hoping the schools would be able to reopen this year, but with this announcement, we must prepare to move forward. This means your teachers will continue to provide review and enrichment activities through virtual and other formats as we finish this year’s school calendar. Again we ask that if you are having difficulties receiving your assignments, please contact your school office.
