Athletic Director Bio
From Our New Athletic Director: Mr. Joe Skura
I am excited to have been selected by the administration and school board to serve as your new Athletic Director and secondary library/media specialist!
Athletics have been important to me throughout my life, and have assisted in life-lessons, entertainment, memories, and building lasting friendships and relationships. I am a firm believer in “raising the bar,” in the classroom and in the athletic arena, and being challenged to continue to strive for greater success.
I am fortunate to work alongside both Bobbi Baer at East Juniata High School and Alyssa Adam at Juniata High School, along with the principals of the buildings, who have done an outstanding job of developing the athletics program in the district.
I am a native at Cambria County, PA, where I graduated from both Penn Cambria High School and Mount Aloysius College (MAC) in Cresson.
After high school, I was a reporter, Bureau Chief, and then City Editor of The Mountaineer-Herald, Ebensburg’s weekly local newspaper, after being hired through writing my high school news column.
I earned my Bachelor degree in Elementary/Early Childhood education and English from MAC. I am certified in both Elementary/Early Childhood education, as well as English 7-12 and Library Science K-12.
I began my teaching career at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Ebensburg, five days before my student teaching assignment was scheduled to end in 2008. I was at BC until last school year, when I taught English at Mount Union Area High School.
At Bishop Carroll, I served as Head Girls’ Volleyball Coach from 2008-2016. The program went from one with very few accolades and wins to a perennial contender for the District 6 championship and state playoff contender.
On the volleyball court, my teams won the District title in 2013, and Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference titles in 2011 and 2013 (LHAC). The ladies were District runners-up in 2012, 2015, and 2016. We were in the state playoffs in 2012-16, reaching the state semi-final in 2013, and quarterfinals in 2012. I have been blessed to coach numerous athletes who were named all-state, and also surpassed 100 coaching victories in only 7 years thanks to the talented athletes. I was named LHAC Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013.
I served as athletic director at BC from 2013-2016, and was assistant athletic director in 2011 and 2012. While in the position, I was proud to oversee the implementation of a strict focus on academics first and strong athletics that expected accountability and’ raising the bar’ from all. We were able to hire several strong coaches who challenged our athletes and taught strong life skills. Through this, they won championships and saw success in and outside of the classroom.
I wore many hats at Bishop Carroll, including English teacher, student council advisor, sophomore class advisor, National English Honor Society Advisor, Homecoming Advisor, and yearbook advisor. I was named District 6 Student Council Advisor of the Year in 2012.
An avid writer, I have worked as a freelance writer for The Altoona Mirror, Cambria-Somerset County’s publication “Our Town” newspaper, and I continue to write a weekly sports column for Johnstown’s The Tribune-Democrat.
I have served on the board of directors (Vice President and public relations chair) for the Cambria-Somerset Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship program from 2004-2014.
I have three sisters and am the uncle to two awesome nephews (Aden and Konner) and one spoiled niece (Kyla). I am very blessed with a great family and friends.
I look forward to meeting all of the coaches, parents, and fans of East Juniata High School, Juniata High School, and Tuscarora Junior High School. Please stop and say “hello” if you see me, and don’t hesitate to contact me at email@example.com.
I am proud to be the newest member of the strong academic and athletic teams at Juniata County School District!
